<br />
Here is another education in your corner post. However, I do want to say this about the news that happened yesterday. Well, the news I covered yesterday, to be honest.<br />
<br />
One of the topics were child brides. How do you feel about your daughter being married off at the tender age of 9 or 10? Isn't that bad enough? Well, how about your daughter being married off at the age of 9 or 10 with no education? Yes, in India that's what is happening with these poor girls. However, at least in their culture, the girls are a burden to the parents because she is going to live with her husband and his relatives.<br />
<br />
The story I covered was about a boarding school that takes child brides and gives them an education to make them more valuable in life and to their husbands.<br />
<br />
The next topic I covered, had to do with why Germany gives out free college education while we in America do not. Well, you will be surprised that not many German people actually go to college. Nonetheless, it was very interesting to see why they get free education and we do not.<br />
<br />
Here are the links to the articles <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="94879d12-1ef9-48ec-be2f-95b6ed9f263a" id="929a1a97-02b8-4a33-b30e-6d42040fc585">for</gs> the above topics.<br />

In India Veerni Insitute is where child brides and girls alike go to get their high school education. Sharma explains what it is like at the Institute.</div>

<br /></div>
<div>
I do want to say this, to me it seems as if states are shying away from Common Core. It seems as if they want to make children feel smarter as they not holding them to high standards. I don't mean having ridiculously high standards, but hold them to standards that is attainable. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Granted, when I was a kid (and it wasn't that long ago) we dealt with FCAT year after year. Do I think that really helped us be who we are? Well, no. Then again, you are talking to a girl who sucked at the <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="40bc6280-7251-4638-ae9d-0272b1216018" id="c69a280a-f3cd-4100-8f32-88552968b921">test</gs>. Should that tell your teachers, parents, and community about how smart you are or how dumb you are? No. Just because someone is better at testing than others should not dictate anything. </div>

<br /></div>
<div>
Enough off of that. Here is the latest education news. </div>

<br />
I am doing something a little different, these "Education in your corner" posts will be a round up of all educational news that I covered the day prior. For those that don't know, I write education news not only on this blog, which can be found here, but I also write education news for Examiner and The Daily Voice.<br />
<br />
Unlike the educational posts, I post on here, which tends to be more about college, since I am a college student, these posts will contain anything from political debates on education to what new online courses they may be offering.<br />
<br />
I guarantee if you are an educational buff like myself, you will love the variety of news, I will bring to you every single day!<br />
<br />
Without further ado, here are the education news for October 24, 2015.<br />

Obama's administration says students are spending way too much time on studying and preparing for standardize tests that it needs to end.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6612545952093730890.post-12537204126151525452015-10-20T08:30:00.000-07:002015-10-20T08:30:33.767-07:00Is making higher education affordable possible?<div class="MsoNormal">
There is no doubt about it that the cost of going to college
is skyrocketing, and politicians are not helping the cause. For example,
Clinton’s “New College Compact” basically, the plan is to spend more tax dollars,
so we can make college debt-free. However, she is proposing to spend nearly
$350 billion throughout the course of 10 years to fund college tuition and
reduce student loan payments.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Yet this solution is not really a solution at all when you
think about it. It would be a Band-Aid to the entire problem. This solution
does not address the skyrocketing tuition costs: how much federal funds will
go into higher education and lacks an alternative to the customary four-year
degrees. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, it does broaden the higher education space and has room for
innovation. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Needless to say the Higher Education Reform and Opportunity
Act, also known as <a href="http://www.lee.senate.gov/public/index.cfm/press-releases?ID=bc8a61f7-fd55-43b6-bbf7-ab93439222f7">HERO</a> would pick up the slack that Clinton’s “New College
Compact” lacks in. HERO was introduced by Sen. Mike Lee. The <a href="https://www.congress.gov/bill/114th-congress/senate-bill/649">HERO Act</a> defines their own accreditation
standards and includes alternatives to the customary four-year degree. Access
to these alternatives through the accreditation reform will lessen the
frustration of rising tuition and student loan debt. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This burden has been growing alongside the government
spending on education. The federal Pell Grants have increased from $2.5 billion
in 1980 to nearly <a href="http://www.aacc.nche.edu/Publications/Briefs/Documents/PolicyBrief_Pell%20Grant.pdf">$30 billion in 2015</a>. Needless to say, the cost of college
also skyrocketed over 500 percent since 1985. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The Federal Reserve Bank of New York conducted a study that
revealed that every dollar that was added to the Pell grants caused the tuition
to jump by 55 cents, while on the other hand every dollar added to subsidized
loans causes tuition by 65 cents. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In other words, the more money the government puts into
education, the more expensive the tuition costs. Basically, the connection
between the government and tuition costs are the reason for the affordability
issue. The promise of the taxpayers funding the schools gives the schools
enticement to increase prices, knowing that there will always be someone to
foot the bill—you the taxpayer. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Basically, if we go back to what Clinton wants to do and
increase the federal funding, what will that do for college students? That will
just raise the prices of how much it will cost to get your degree. The average student
loan borrower in 2015 will need to pay nearly $35,000 in student loan debt.
College student and even graduate students cannot afford that on their income. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Rather than sticking to the old ideas about funding
education, reformers should really work towards a complete makeover on how to
fund education, since the old ways are not working. That means more choices and
alternatives to customary four-year degrees. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So that is where the HERO Act comes into play. It will
reform the federal accreditation standards used to organize which schools are
legitimate. This entire process is vital, determining whether the credits can
be transferred from school to school. Sadly, the process does more to protect
colleges that are already established for the competition to promote
high-quality, affordable education. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Needless to say, this is a step in the right direction. It
is paving the way for more options to get a better quality, affordable
education system rather than a difficult and costly spending education system
we have now. <o:p></o:p></div>

Here are my 6 tips to help you save on those textbooks:<o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Shop Online<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you haven’t figured out by now, you can buy your
textbooks online. Yup, it is usually cheaper too. Barnes & Nobles, Amazon,
<gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="77f56197-709c-42d5-9dd6-a7240de467ac" id="315f4ccc-5ba5-4898-91fb-9088c8864364">Half.com, CengageBrain.com,</gs> AbeBooks.com, and many other sites actually sell a
wide variety of textbooks. However, when trying to find the best price, you
should put the ISBN in BigWords.com. BigWords.com searches multiple sites that
also scour the internet for coupons and other great money saving deals. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
E-books<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Did you know getting e-books are a lot cheaper than
paperback books? Yup, all you need is a tablet and you can have all your books
on a light weight tool rather than carrying all of your books to class. Might
as well kill two birds with a single money saving stone. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Rent your books<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you are anything like my sister, you should rent your
textbooks because why is there a need to keep them? You can rent your books
either from your campus bookstore or Chegg.com, eCampus.com, Bookbyte.com, and
many other sites. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Buy an earlier edition<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Yes, yes, yes! I highly recommend this. If you have earlier
edition use it because they are basically the same. Your professor may and will
frown upon it, but who needs the few sentences and updated photos anyway; when
you can save a ton of money?<o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Get an international edition<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Purchasing an international edition is pretty much similar
to using an earlier edition. Hey, when money is an issue, you got to do, what you
have to do. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Share with a friend<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You were brought up on sharing is caring, right? Why not
share your textbooks with your friend because it can cut the cost of buying
textbooks in half easily. All you have to do is make a plan for who has the
book when and for how long. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

Here are the top 6 tips to save money when you are out there

<br />
Well, do you remember when I posted <i><a href="http://thetalesofabrokecollegestudent.blogspot.com/2015/08/free-playtex-sport.html">FREE: Playtex Sport</a></i>? Before I posted that, I already claimed that offer about two weeks ago. Normally, it takes anywhere from 6-8 weeks to even receive your free goodies. So, I was pleasantly surprised when I opened up my mailbox and saw a package in it.<br />

Well, I know we all are, but the prices can be quite shocking. However, if you are on a budget, like myself, you will definitely want to take a peek at <a href="http://www.kmart.com/essential-garden-brighton-dining-table/p-028W008786769001P?sid=KAx20061023x272xTier3&aff=Y&PID=7118569&AID=11042397">Kmart's Essential Garden Brighton Dining Table</a>. This table is regularly $149.99, but it is now on clearance for $37.49! Yes, you heard that right, $37.49 for a nice outside table. Now, you cannot get better than that!<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzb6lFbq1ARbFHeZ82xSx732JCCZlw0jlvBnfqYQuhKk1TqYRUJkRrjQXPc4_wT8fSY_GNqb8ZBHILKT3cU8nZz5n2D_cQdQUh-QCVu1nCqJthzhicos7WmOlIpM6Mofrch52AVrx3pnQ/s1600/Clearance+Alert.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzb6lFbq1ARbFHeZ82xSx732JCCZlw0jlvBnfqYQuhKk1TqYRUJkRrjQXPc4_wT8fSY_GNqb8ZBHILKT3cU8nZz5n2D_cQdQUh-QCVu1nCqJthzhicos7WmOlIpM6Mofrch52AVrx3pnQ/s320/Clearance+Alert.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /><div>
<br /></div>
<div>
When you think about it, $40 for an outside table is pretty awesome. Especially when you are in the middle of remodeling and money is an issue. The table has 4.5 stars, sits 4-people and even comes with an end table, two extra chairs and ottomans. </div>

<br /></div>
<div>
To save even more money, see if you can't pick it up in the store and save on shipping! Snag up this table before they are sold out!</div>

If you haven't figured that out yet, you will want to grab your favorite beverage and read, <i>"<a href="http://thetalesofabrokecollegestudent.blogspot.com/2015/07/broke-college-student-benefits.html">Broke College Student Benefits.</a></i>" Now, as I said before, it is a valid excuse when it comes to you being a broke college student.<br />
<br />
As a broke college student, your number one hobby is always looking for free items. These items don't have to be fancy, but they do have to be free. So, today's piece will be a little bit different. I have been posting freebies, and applying for them also.<br />
<br />

<br />
So, the point of this blog post is, when I get freebies in the mail, I will share them with you. Today, I received a freebie shirt from Jet.com. Jet.com is similar to Amazon, it is actually supposed to beat Amazon prices. I've done a little bit of research to see what Jet is, well, what I found is it finds the lowest price, and you get <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="9efcb17d-8c8d-4175-ac67-6c13f4af608f" id="3f80fe85-1c7c-4326-8ce1-b5c4d2251c80">members</gs> savings off of that price. There is also <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="318bc698-9670-4527-a0aa-1c6cff8acf9c" id="bc4779ce-7c41-45ad-b6b6-c1215e0eb9c5">a</gs> annual fee of $49.99; however, you can try them for free for 3 months.<br />
<br />
Personally, I haven't played around with Jet to see if the it is worth it or not, but I will check it out as the time moves on though. Looks like a great concept, especially if you are looking for bulk items for a cheaper price.<br />

Okay, I bet I can guess how many times you’ve been told that
you need a better organization system when you head off to college. Sadly, I
was that kid too. I carried around one binder and all my classes where in that
binder and it was a huge, huge mess. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Well, I am not necessarily here to tell you that you need to
get a better organization system, but I am here to give you tips, tricks, and
hints on how a better organization system can and will make your life a lot
less messy. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Utilize your agenda<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Most colleges will give you a free planner, so take
advantage of it. This book should become your best friend when all else fails,
so get acquainted with it. However, every single professor will give you a
syllabus, or have the syllabus posted online. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you don’t know what a syllabus is it’s the course outline
of what is expected of you during this course. It will give you information
such as what reading you have to do, what you will be going over, when are your
tests, papers, etc. If you write things down in your planner and look at it on
a daily basis, this will help you see what is on your agenda for that day or
week, so you can plan accordingly. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Reminders<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You and just about everyone else in the world has a
smartphone, why don’t you use to well, be smart? Along with your planner, also
stick important reminders in your reminders feature. Yes, the feature that not
that many people tend to use. This will help you have an in your face reminder
when important things such as papers and tests are due. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Study schedule<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now you are probably wondering, what a study schedule has to
do with organization. Well, if anything, take this lesson from me. In order to
do great in college, you need a study schedule. Yes, this is basically your
backbone. You need to organize your life to fit in your study time, so you can
complete your tasks on your reminders, and have some quality time with your
planner. However, this doesn’t mean you need to plan for a 2 hour study session
either, you can always have 30 minute sessions too, depending on how well you
do with your sessions. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Bring color into your life<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Color, color, color! Did you know color can keep you
organized when it comes to your classes? You will end up taking anywhere from
three to five classes a semester, which means it can be quite confusing when it
comes to handouts, homework, reading, and overall just studying. This is why
color coding your life can be helpful. I know, when you had a rough night and
you wake up 5 minutes before class starts, you need to grab your things for
your first class, well, if you color coded your class like I suggested, you
will be able to grab and go with little to no thought. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Be backpack ready<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This is a wonderful tip, especially if you are the type of
person that just kind of gets up and goes. Keep your backup stocked with paper,
pencils, calculators, highlighters, post-its, and anything else you use on a
regular basis. This way no matter what class you are in, you will always have
the supplies you need. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Write everything<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Write. Down. Everything. This is absolutely vital. If
someone tells you about a study session, write it down. If your professor tells
you about your upcoming pop quiz, write it down. Don’t count on your memory
because chances are you will forget it. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Avoid procrastination<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Trust me, I know it is hard, but you have to overcome this.
Yes, I will admit I am the number one procrastinator out there. Just about
everything, I do and write, tend to get on the back burner for a while.
However, if you stay ahead of your schedule, it will thank you. It will give
you time to enjoy life when life happens. However, this is my little way of not
procrastinating, but procrastinating some at the same time. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Be an active student<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Having a good relationship with your professor is pretty
vital to your education. You want to come to class on time, pay attention, and
participate when you can. If you are having trouble throughout the class, do
not hesitate to go up to your professor and ask them to clarify what you are
having difficulty with. That is why they are there, to be honest. Plus, the
more time you spend with your professor, the better chance, they may write up
an awesome recommendation. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
USB<o:p></o:p></h2>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
A USB should be your knight and shining armor. Yup, I said it, your knight and shining armor, not
the boy down the hall that has, well, amazing cologne. When all else fails, a
USB will save your life, not literally, well, your school life, if you want to
be exact. Trust me on this one, carry one around because you won’t know when
the computer system at school is acting wonky and it will not let you print out
your paper.<o:p></o:p></div>

Congrats on deciding to attain a higher education. If you
haven’t done your research already, you probably found out that college can be quite
affordable if you choose to f<a href="https://fafsa.ed.gov/">ill out the financial aid form</a>. Again, I want to
give kudos to you for wanting to learn more about this financial aid. <o:p></o:p></div>

As luck would have it, more than $238 billion in financial
aid is available throughout the United States to help pay for college for those

FAFSA, this is the first step in applying.<o:p></o:p></div>

What is a FAFSA?<o:p></o:p></h2>

as assets, income, and any other information deemed financial.<o:p></o:p></div>

Applying for aid <o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
To be considered for financial aid, you need to complete
your FAFSA before the deadline. However, you should know that different states,

college and state sponsored grants, work study programs, and loans.<o:p></o:p></div>

Also, some states and even some colleges will require you to
file another form for aid, you will need to check with your college financial
aid department for their requirements. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Deadlines<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You can start filing your FASFA in the beginning of January.
However, if you want to really get a head start on your FAFSA, you can use
FAFSAFirst in the fall. <a href="http://www.fafsa.com/fafsa-services/fafsa-first">FAFSAFirst</a> will then submit your form to a federal
processor when the filing begins in early January. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

One thing you need to know is, federal aid is limited and is
on a first-come, first-served basis, so the earlier you file better chance
of you getting the most out of the aid. <o:p></o:p></div>

Many states, colleges, and universities have filing
deadlines as early as the first weeks in January.<o:p></o:p></div><div class="MsoNormal"><br></div>

Also, keep in mind that your college and/or universities
have deadlines to file your FAFSA. You will want to pay close attention to the
deadline. You don’t want to miss the deadline because you can lose any and all
opportunities to receive financial aid for that school year. All in all, if you are unsure, call up your
college financial aid department. <o:p></o:p></div>

Nonetheless, financial aid can definitely make paying for
school much easier. Always keep in contact with your financial aid department,
especially if you are not sure of their deadlines. <o:p></o:p></div>

I want to say congrats to the entire college freshman class
of 2015!! It will be a fun roller coaster ride, to say the least. I bet a lot
of you are stressing over being the small fish in the pond again. Well, there
is nothing to worry about as college will have a different vibe then high
school had. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Honestly, going off to college will be a lot different. You
will have a lot of different feelings that you didn’t have in high school. No
fear about that either, the transition will be an easier one depending if you
are going to a local college, or you are venturing off to a university. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For starters, the first few weeks you are on campus, will be
pretty critical for you. During this time you will have to make some important
decisions that will affect a good part of your life, if not all of your life. I
have compiled a list of 14 tips to help you get through these first few weeks.
Some of these tips will help you throughout your entire college career, while
others will help you throughout the remainder of your life. No matter what,
always be yourself. You will cherish these memories for a lifetime. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Orientations<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Depending on if you are going away to college or going to
your local community college, there will be tours, orientations, and freshmen
events. It is vital to attend all of these tours, orientations, and events. You
are probably asking yourself why you should. <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="b83ec822-dc9f-46f0-8ef6-baf5dc8e71f1" id="022e3584-208a-4bd7-970e-12397ddee845"><gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="ae87cbcf-4060-416a-b5e7-4911f80804e6" id="94132278-f023-4e70-b44e-844f9d682f17">Well for</gs></gs> starters, it will ease
you into the campus/school, you will find hidden gems that you may not know
about, plus it’s a great source of knowledge. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Roommates<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Alright, if you are staying in a dorm, chances are you will
have 1-3 roommates. Well, with all this technology you can “meet” your roommate
on social media before even seeing them in person. Needless, to say add them on
your Facebook, Twitter, Google +, because this will help the anxiety of all
your roommates. You will be able to get a gist of what they are like, what do
you have in common, etc. Not to mention, plan to meet your roommates on campus
somewhere, so you all can hang out in the first few days before school
officially starts for the semester. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Get organized<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While you were in high school, some teachers probably babied
you, am I right? <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="0c8e33a8-765b-4c45-aa05-3980ae79fffb" id="aba5072c-d4a1-4868-897c-4b9ad624f4b3"><gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="da1d74c8-1d0a-474a-8aca-edc09ba4136d" id="25139485-9759-46bf-a928-9a66f8388e2d">College</gs></gs> won’t be like that, they will not accept homework

<h2>
Find a study place<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Finding a place to study will be vital. As you will soon
learn, your studying will soon overtake your social life, if you had one
before. However, some people choose to study in their dorm, while others head
on down to their campus library. Where ever you choose to study, make sure it

grades up. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Go to class<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This one seems pretty obvious, but you won’t believe how
many kids do not attend class. I will admit I was one of those kids for a
while, but you have to have discipline. Of course, staying up all night
partying always sounds great until you realize you have to be up at 7a<gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="65f185c3-73a5-4e93-a30a-7a5fda56395f" id="acba6607-7364-4189-b37a-484af0ef998e"><gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="3ac660fd-0178-47a2-be9c-b30d4c4162a6" id="cd26bb76-4f46-472e-b2f1-f08646476769">.</gs></gs>m to

Pick and choose your battles wisely. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Know your syllabi<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Your syllabi should be your bible for the next semester. I
am not even kidding, your syllabi will have what is expected of you, what you
will be learning, when items are due, and how you will be graded. Get to know
it and learn to follow it. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Meet with your professors<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Your professors are always ready to lend a helping hand. You
need them for anything, look at your syllabi and see when they have office
hours. Take advantage of those office hours because you can learn a lot just by
stopping in and asking your questions. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Get to know your academic advisor<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Just like in high school you will have an academic advisor,
it is vital that you keep in contact with them after each semester of classes.
They will be able to tell you what classes you still need, what classes they are
offering this semester, and help you if you run into any academic issues. Don’t
be afraid of going to them, if you truly need help.<o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Seek a balance<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You will learn this is not high school anymore when your
parents aren’t telling you, it’s not a good idea to go to the campus library at
2 in the morning. You will have to balance your life without anyone telling
what you should and shouldn’t do. It will take some time getting used to, to
say the least. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Get involved on campus<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
During your first year, it can be intimidating, but if you
were active in high school; you should be just as active in college. However,

You will see a
lot of them looking for new members during the first few weeks of school. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Strive for good grades<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Of course, that should be your main goal, but since you will
have so much freedom that you are not <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="3181f7a7-bd1d-439b-9ab3-747a23b52a75" id="6336cb5a-ac16-4182-8359-cd9387e7b278"><gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="e64dcfc9-ad6c-44ad-9a21-8d3ba88ac34e" id="c3da8d63-a18d-4305-96eb-cdabc183f43e">use</gs></gs> to, getting good grades can be a
challenge. As long as you stick to a routine that includes studying and going
to class, you will do just fine. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Study resources on campus<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal" style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<h2>
What do you want to do?<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, that you know about freelancing the first question in
mind is probably, what can you do? Well, most people that I talk to, assume
that freelancing means writing. They could think that as I am a freelancer and
I mainly write, but that isn’t everything to freelancing. When freelancing you
will find people are looking for all sorts of things, such as virtual
assistants, writing, editing, customer service, telemarketing, and much more. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Think of it this way, if someone needs it, I bet there is a
market for it. So, sit back and think <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="cd040656-668a-4104-8465-8b000284c933" id="8ef402ec-b190-4d56-ab3d-d501a27eadd9">of</gs> what you are good at and what you want
to work on. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Brand Yourself<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In order to succeed in your freelancing career, you must
brand yourself. Basically, if you are starting out, I recommend using <a href="http://www.upwork.com/"><gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="08e49695-28d5-4d9f-9416-1c8de943ebcc" id="7c98e2ba-4db9-41b2-a0f7-3ab4f6006dee">Upwork</gs></a>, <a href="http://www.elance.com/">Elance</a>,
or <a href="http://www.freelancer.com/">Freelancer</a>. These sites are free
unless you want more applications, which they all have their own pricing.
Nonetheless, you can create a name for yourself. These sites will allow you to
create a portfolio, ratings, and work history.
These sites are great for dabbling into a few different fields that you
are interested in. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Of course, it can be a little scary at first, but after a
while, customers will know your name and will want to hire you on the spot.
Other than that, you will want to work on making your profile making clients
want to hire you because you are their best option. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Start Pitching<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You got your profile all set up, but you don’t know what you
should do next. Well, the next step is to start looking for jobs that you are
interested in. You will need a great cover letter that goes over your
experience, skills, and why they should hire you. With a great profile or even
a portfolio to back it up can make the client make up their mind in no time. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I do want to say this, do not get <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="a67d8cad-fc79-4b68-a29e-37ba320ddcb8" id="2b314815-5b30-45a6-b53a-b21fe45aa28d">discourage</gs> if you don’t
hear back from your first few pitches to clients. This is completely normal,
but keep on going because starting out can be a little difficult for those who
never worked from home. As long as you have the skills, mindset, and patience,
you will be on your way to landing your first freelance gig. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
That’s it. Yup, that is how to become a freelancer. It is a
pretty decent gig if you play your cards right. However, I cannot stress
enough, if you want to be successful at this, you will also need to treat this
like a real job. If not, you will not see the success that most people see. <o:p></o:p></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<b>Question:</b> Are you
ready to start a freelancing career?<o:p></o:p></div>

As you will soon learn, I am very passionate about
freelancing. If you were to <a href="https://www.google.com/webhp?sourceid=chrome-instant&ion=1&espv=2&ie=UTF-8#q=amanda%20byas">Google my nam</a>e, you will see I am a freelance
writer, I dabbled in transcription, and so on. However, what I loved and still
love about freelancing is as a college student, you have more than enough work
with your classes. However, with freelancing you can set your own schedule, you
can work when you want to, not when the company you work for needs you. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>

<span id="goog_151487668"></span><span id="goog_151487669"></span><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Instead of having to juggle a “real” job as most people like
to refer to it as, you can freelance to help jump start your career, if you
choose to; or gain some very important skills for a better job after
graduation. From experience, it is pretty easy to start and well rewarding, if
you stick to it. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, that you are probably Googling how to become this great
freelancer, I do want to warn you that it is not as easy, not as simple as it
sounds. I know how hard it is to keep up with school, and how hard it is to
keep up with your clients. If you fall into this never ending hole, you may never
be able to get out; you will compromise your school and professional work. Therefore,
in a blink of an eye, you will fail both school and work at the same exact
time. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This is why I will let you in on five secrets that have
helped me keep school and work life from failing. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Prioritize Your Classes<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This tip is a no-brainer, but you don’t know how easy it is
to put your classes on the back burner for a few days. You think, oh, it is
just a few days, I can easily catch up, but that is how it starts. A few days
will turn into a week, then the next time you realize it, you are so far behind
that it is almost impossible to catch up. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, let me tell you this, I failed a few classes due to
this. You are getting ready to start on some homework and your client <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="12813420-87e7-48f8-b398-027ffa012dea" id="3dc02299-0338-4bff-8680-a2337b6abfa2"><gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="6ab5d67a-4e28-49f5-841d-294afd6b84ea" id="bf792dbf-e9ab-44dc-9bcd-e32c3a41b232"><gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="504d3cb1-5a3c-4471-b07f-e78dca486e85" id="db8e18c5-18fc-4d99-ba5e-8a55a8f6e774">Skypes</gs></gs></gs>
you, and they need you to complete a few articles for them by tomorrow. Well,
you decide to not do your homework that is also due tomorrow and do the
articles. Now tell me, is this the right thing to do? No, it is not. You won’t believe
how many times, I have done this because I thought money was more important than
my education. If you have homework, do your homework. Do not take your focus
off of school over a few dollars. Keep that your number one priority no matter
what. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Let Your Client Know you are a Student<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, this one, I <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="402ac3f0-2bf1-4dc5-9c1e-4219bb432898" id="833b6f5c-d232-4299-af08-fe7ccb82dab9"><gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="8d87975b-a7b9-4d42-a9de-2f4da332fe04" id="7940cefc-ad5f-499c-99b1-34629dd8acc3"><gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="6164b124-3ff1-4795-8aeb-fd2eb024c138" id="b6e6adb2-1556-4da7-b3c9-5eafa89bf8ae">do depending</gs></gs></gs> on the client, and their
needs. If a client wants me to be available 24/7, I will tell them that I am a
full-time student and not available during this time, on these days. This will
let the client know that you have other obligations, and most of the time they
will respect that. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Most clients will not mind that you are a college student;
some of them may even be impressed and ask what you are studying. As a client,
they know you will have times where you cannot work, or answer your emails, and
messages quickly, but this should not be your excuse why you cannot make a deadline
either. For instance, your client will need 5 articles by next Thursday and it is
Saturday. You should not tell your client on Thursday that you cannot deliver
them because of school. There is more than enough time for you to complete
those articles and still focus on school. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Choose Your Activities Wisely<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you’re a social butterfly, you might be a member of many
clubs and organizations at your college. Joining the right groups can be a huge
benefit for your academic and professional careers, but as a student, freelancer, you’ve got to choose which ones will be best.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
College doesn’t have to be about parties every night. There are
a lot of different clubs and organizations that can help your freelance career,
as well as your academic career. For instance, some colleges offer an
entrepreneurship club, this club will help you create and maintain connections
that you may need later in life. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Personally, I do choose to not join any clubs or
organizations. However, that doesn’t mean it is not a good choice because it
is. It all depends on what kind of club you are choosing to be a part of. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Don’t Spread Yourself Too Thin<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
This happens to the best of us; even the veterans have an
issue with this. You need to know your limits and respect them at all times. If
you feel overwhelmed, you may need to take a break. However, do not plan a good
<gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="3fbeb772-eccc-48de-9f87-f4a87497535d" id="5bbd342d-6a74-4958-bb77-bf25d63d92a1">work load</gs> when it is finals week either. You should always plan for times when
you know studying will be heavier too. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For instance, during finals week, I may only write a few
pieces rather than during a week when I barely have any school work, I can
write much, much more. It all really depends on my school work. Personally, I
plan my weeks using my school syllabus and go from there. Sometimes, the load
changes, while other times it doesn’t. However, it is a great tool to use. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Make Your Own Rules<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Needless to say, what I love about being a freelancer, you
are your own boss. Yes, that is the best perk about this job. You get to choose
what you want to do, when you want to do, without having someone breathing down
your neck. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Therefore, what you need to do before you contract with
anyone, you need to make sure you and your client are both on the same page
about the terms of the position. Since your client is choosing to work with
you, they are accepting your work conditions. Basically, all that means, is they
cannot complain about your work schedule. However, sometimes, clients will say they
need articles by this time, or by this day. If you can do it, tell them, if you
cannot try and compromise a time. Don’t tell the customer how you are the boss
and you will work when you want because quite frankly, you won’t have many
clients. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So, please do not let this, you’re the boss thing get to
your head. You may be the boss, but treating your customers with respect, and
allowing them to have some say when they need their work by can help you and
your business. Your clients will more likely recommend you to their colleagues.
<o:p></o:p></div>

Get on your theaters mailing list<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Alright, first thing is it is 100% worth signing up for all
your local theater’s mailing list, because you will be surprised to know that
sometimes they will give out free screening information. However, you never
know, your local theater may have a variety of different coupons, promotions,
so signing up can be beneficial. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Online promotions<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you take advantage of the internet, you will find that
some companies offer movie tickets in exchange for participating in promotions.
For example, in June, Minute Maid announced their promotion that you can get a
free movie ticket for every six bottles you purchased. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Fandango<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, this is kind of my go-to site. Fandango is a movie
ticket site that has an entire section just for free movie tickets or special
offers. It is a must if you are looking to snag a few free tickets this summer.

explain in another blog post. However, Klout offers you free items all based on
your social media use. Sometimes Klout will offer free movie tickets, so it is
vital to sign up for them to see if they may have any tickets coming your way. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Mystery shopping<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Mystery shopping is great for a lot of products, but I will
go over that in another blog post. However, they are great to score some free
movie tickets, in exchange for you to rate and observe your experience while at
the movie theater. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Work for the movie theater<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When you are employed by a movie theater, most of the time
you get to see all the new releases for free! Yes, you read that right, for
free! It is just one of the many perks of the job. Not to mention, you get to
come home smelling like buttery delicious popcorn. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Movie in the park<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Does your town of movie in the park? I know my town holds
movie in the park usually during the summer and spring months. You will want to
check out your local newspaper, or even your local radio station will know when
and where the movie in the park will be held. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
The movie in the park has been always free, at least in my town.
It is a fun family-friendly movie for the entire family to enjoy. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Stream it<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We all know getting a subscription of our favorite streaming
service is beyond worth it. However, the main streaming services that most of
us utilize is <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Prime-Instant-Video/b?node=2676882011">Amazon Prime Instant Video</a>, <a href="http://www.hulu.com/start">Hulu</a>, and of course, <a href="http://netflix.com/">Netflix</a>. They
all offer an overabundance of movies to choose from. However, did you know
there are ways you can watch movies from each of these services for free?<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Well, first off, Hulu offers a limited selection of movies
that anyone can watch. These movies, at least what I have seen are normally
older movies, which is perfectly fine if you are looking to find something interesting.
Also, if you are not up to watching some of their free movie selections, you can
get your free seven-day Hulu Plus trial and spend those days watching all the
free movies and television shows you want. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Next up, Netflix, which happens to be my life when I am not
working; offers a free month! Yes, a free month to stream all the movies and
television shows you want. You can start your free trial anytime. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Last but certainly not least, there is Amazon Prime Instant
Video. They offer a 30-day free trial, which has both television shows and
movies for free. Personally, it is a great deal because they normally have new
hit television shows and movies on. <o:p></o:p></div>
<h2>
Trade movies<o:p></o:p></h2>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We’ve all done this plenty of times as children. When you
are tired of your boring old movies, you ask your best friends to trade, or you
decide to have your own movie night. Chances are you will have a much better time
watching movies with your friends, than watching movies along. Who knows, you
may end up seeing a flick that you’ve been dying to see. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Also, movie swap is always a great idea. I know I did this
as a child. This is where you bring your old DVDs or back in the day VHS’s to
your friends swap them out and you have some new movies to watch. This always
worked so wonderfully as you always had movies your friends wanted and you wanted
movies that your friends had. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
<i>Now it is your turn: Now that I gave you my ways of saving
on movie tickets, what is your ways you save on movie tickets?</i><o:p></o:p></div>

If you are like me, you are counting down the days until
July 15; however, if you <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="5da23706-85c8-4447-800e-6c755eb95eb0" id="ae38c1cc-6217-49fb-995e-127c255fee2e">been</gs> under a rock (which is perfectly okay), you
missed out on some big news. On July 15, Amazon will be holding a big, global,
one-day shopping event to celebrate their twentieth anniversary! Amazon is
promising us that Prime Day will out do Black Friday, but they have been pretty
quiet on the specifics. However, I managed to find a few deals for you. <o:p></o:p></div>
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

First is first, there is one small catch, which many people
seem to overlook. The name of the event is Prime Day, well; you have to be a
Prime member to take advantage of these awesome Prime Day deals. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
However, for most of us, that is not really a catch or even
a deal breaker. I know the majority of people are already Prime members. I know
I shop on Amazon for literally everything because I can snag a lot of great
deals on there. Not to mention, the
Amazon Prime includes unlimited streaming of TV shows, movies, books, music,
and unlimited secure photo storage. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
All in all, I believe that Amazon Prime is well worth it, at
least to me. However, with this Prime Day, it might make the deal even sweeter
to be able to snag up some better bargains than any old day. The deals begin at
midnight, with new deals posted as often as every ten or so minutes. Along with
those deals, they will have thousands upon thousands Lightning Deals with seven
Deals of the Day. What really sweetens the deal is you will get the deals with
fast, free shipping. <o:p></o:p></div>

I won’t say every college student is broke because that is a
cliché. However, most college students don’t have much money waiting to be
spent or any money at all. With that being said, you and I both know college
isn’t cheap and can cause student debt and much more. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I do not by any means, want to scare anyone or change their
minds about going to college. I will admit, going to college can be quite fun
because you will be in a pool full of people from different walks of life. It
is not only a place where you will be attending classes 24/7, but you will
learn a lot about different cultures, how to budget your own money, and
eventually gain a great education. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
But, here is the entire point to this post, being a broke
college student does have its advantages. Let me tell you why.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

<span id="goog_369658700"></span><span id="goog_369658701"></span><br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you learn to live on less for your daily expenses, then
while you’re in college and for the rest of your life you’ll be able to
prioritize the things that are actually important to you. There are a million
ways to learn to budget, and I am no expert. But here’s something to keep in
mind:<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For starters, if you are a broke college student like myself
with no family to dig you out of any financial holes you may put yourself in,
you learn to live on less money for your daily expenses. While you are living
as a broke college student, you will learn how important it is to prioritize
things that a) are important to you b) need to be paid ASAP and c) budgeting. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Number one rule <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="479c93bd-f362-4816-81cd-05c451cf0607" id="497442ec-cf5f-4314-ad75-f0b8be7be83f">to</gs> being a broke college student is it is a
valid excuse. Yes, you heard it from me. It can be used as a valid excuse.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Now, as a college student, you probably think your goals
need to only deal with a self-improvement, education, and experiences. However,
not knocking on them and saying anything negative about it, but you have to
think; you are investing your hard earned money and time to reach your academic
goals. Yes, this does benefit you in a variety of ways, but why spend all your
money on just that? <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I decided early <gs class="GINGER_SOFTWARE_mark" ginger_software_uiphraseguid="fe833717-3df6-4211-8184-c19fe4358653" id="f50a8bcd-56be-475f-8952-b0ec86f4e72e">into</gs> my college life, that I would only
spend money on things that I needed to live my daily life, neither nothing more
nor nothing less. Everyone has an experience that they want to finally experience,
am I right? Well, by doing this, you can not only learn to save a dollar, but
you also will get to do things that you want to do. You are not necessarily
making yourself unhappy because overall you have a goal and you are working
towards that. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Basically, what I am trying to get at is, being a broke
college student has its advantages. You will soon learn to be great with money
and you will be savvy earning your hard earned cash too. Sometimes, you just
need a goal in mind to help you along the way.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
Question: Do you believe there are benefits for being a
broke college student?<br />
